In 1948 the panther was chosen as the symbol of Euclid High School. For the past nine years he has watched our school grow; and we, in turn, have watched him grow. Today, he rules the school as the figurehead of our school spirit Never before has he meant so much. We can never forget the hard fighting panther leading us to victory and success in all phases of school life.

It is with pride that we, the editors, dedicate the 1957 Euclidian to the Euclid Panther.

on to become alive. Soon posters would be up and students hurrying to get to their next class.

This is Euclid High, the school in which I reign su- preme. For many days the auditorium lobby remained polished and shiny waiting for the students to enter, step- ping quickly to the music of the pit band. It was in this same auditorium that the first football recognition ceremony was held.

How many students would walk up these steps each day! Most of them would be wearing pins or signs cheering for one of the many activities.

Spirit prevailed whether in sports or studies. The library, trophy case, and pool are all symbols of contests; as books and sportsman- ship go hand-in-hand.

Both students and faculty members carried forth the enthusiasm of our spirit. In the cafeteria they cheered, in the rec room hard ping-pong battles were waged, and in the office corridor many ways were organized to maintain this spirit.

Few students will re- member this part of the school. Usually this path was used as a short cut to the wood shop or to the parking lot.

At night, too, I was remembered. Student voices rang out at the evening ga programs and other activities were supported. This indeed was to be a glorious year

Little could have been accom- plished in studies, activities and spirit without the support of the faculty and administration. As a unit they worked to give the students all the advantages of education. Truly they are the guideposts of America's future. With that in mind, they work to give the future of America know- ledge, character, and the ability to guide others.

"School spirit" is one of those intang- ibles that result from a good school. Teachers sense it and so does your com- munity. It appears to be strongest in those schools where the student body and faculty together are enthusiastic about what the school is trying to do. That is the reason that in some of our colleges the crowd in the stadium will remain standing and cheer the losing team in an athletic contest. It was not winning or losing which was most important. The character and integrity of the boys and girls and their willingness to do the right thing is a basic factor. To do the right thing and to be proud of it in the face of the scorn of others is one of the most important lessons a person may learn. To be proud each year of achievement, contributions made, and future ambitions is the prerogative of every senior class.

This year Euclid Senior High has reached a new high in school spirit which has been manifested in the classroom as well as in extra-curricu- lar activities. Wholehearted devo- tion to worthy purposes, willingness to participate, and appreciation of the efforts of others are some of the components of real spirit. To find yourself, it is said, you must lose yourself in a great cause. May you transpose this school spirit into com- munity spirit, working loyally for the home, school, church, and civic enter- prises.

Seniors

With an eye toward the future the Seniors worked together mak- ing their last year a momentous one. Friends became closer, underclassmen were regarded with warmth and a little envy, and the teachers received gratitude and thanks for their patience and understanding.

As the year slowly drew to a close, dreams turned into reality as Seniors began their march into the future. Someday they will look back to their days at Euclid High remembering "the happy days of youthful pleasure, learning, liv- ing life so dear" and the "memor- ies of our friendships here will lift our hearts to Euclid High."

Entering the doors of Euclid High in September 1954, the Class of '57 found a school new to tradition and spirit. Our Junior year found us or- ganizing the first guidance council and dancing to the music of Harry Hershey at the "Southern Plantation".

It was in our Junior year that the spirit finally arrived. As Seniors, it was our job to continue the spirit. For the first time our football team brought home a victory on Homecom- ing. Both the football team and cross country won Lake Erie League Cham- pionships.

The Senior Prom, picnic, assembly, and graduation helped to complete a perfect year. In the future, the Class of '57 can look back with pride and happy memories at their years at Eu- clid High.

Underclassmen

Underclassmen have helped de- velop the spirit and trditions at Euclid. When they entered as Sophomores they were frightened individuals without a sense of be- longing. For two years they were to work together to develop a class spirit and loyalty to the school. Their Junior Varsity foot- ball team became Co-Champs of the L. E. L. and their assemblies pro- vided entertainment for all. Schol- astically and in service, the juniors and sophomores have done their share of the job of keeping Euclid tops. As upperclassmen next year, they will be expected to maintain the same high standards.

Organizations

Through the various clubs and organizations at Euclid High, stud- ents were offered a chance to earn recognition, become good citizens, develop future goals, and make social contacts. Many friendships were developed in social clubs, and the school and community benefited from the work of the service clubs.

National Honor Society

The most coveted honor that a high school student can receive is to be selected as a member of the National Honor Society. To be eligible, a stud- ent must have an average of eighty- five or better; be in the upper third of his class; and display outstanding traits of character, leadership, and service.

As leaders in our high school, National Honor members helped to continue the spirit through the various organizations in which they partici- pated.

One of the foremost organizations is the National Forensic League. Com- posed of sophomores, juniors, and seniors, members get a chance to participate in such speech activities as debate, original oratory, humorous, dramatic, oratorical declamation, and extemporaneous speaking.

On their many trips throughout the year they showed others how a winn- ing spirit helps to make a winning school.

It is the aim of every high school writer to become a member of the International Quill and Scroll. I. Q. S. recognizes any student who has made a worthy contribution to one of the school publications, is in the upper third of his class scholastically, and has been recommended by an advisor.

Thespians

Students who have earned points through participation in dramatic productions are selected as members of Thespians, Euclid's dramatic so- ciety. At their monthly meetings, members worked hard learning the different aspects of the theater, later incorporated into their annual assem- bly.

Serving as the link between the students and faculty, the Student Council is the most prominent organi- zation and governing body in our school. Representatives from every homeroom meet weekly to discuss the various problems arising in our school.

It is only through the efforts of the Euclidian Business Staff that we are able to publish a yearbook of this size. The Busi- ness Staff raises money by sel- ling subscriptions and adver- tisements. Every year they put out the school record and see that the supplements are sent to alumni subscribers. Their most pleasant job is the dis- tribution of the yearbook to all subscribers during the latter part of May.

Meeting the last minute deadline seems to be the domi- nating factor to editors and reporters of our school paper— "The Survey." Members of the editorial staff all get an equal chance to write editorials, gather news material, take students' polls and write col- umns. The staff is run by six editors and an editor-in-chief. Collecting subscription mon- ey and seeing that each sub- scriber received a Survey every two weeks was the main job of the homeroom representa- tives of the Survey Business Staff. Along with the Business Managers these people sold football and basketball pro- grams, solicited advertising, and also had the difficult job of raising money for the pub- lication of the Survey and the sports programs.

Constantly working to per- fect cheers and to increase school spirit, the cheerleaders and megaphone club have planned pep rallies and boost- ed attendance at home and away games.

The cheerleaders are chosen on acrobatics, arm and leg movements, co-ordination, fac- ial expression, poise, and the ability to lead cheers. They are the true representatives of our school spirit, for they are the leaders of our spirit.

After an extensive contest, articles submitted by the student body are voted upon and edited for publication by the Publica- tions Club. All art work and printing is done by students. Every Wednesday World Affairs members meet to discuss current world news, see movies, hear speakers, and learn about con- ditions in the world. A favorite topic of dis- cussion is the United Nations. Each spring two Euclid students are sent expenses paid to New York to visit the U. N., and Euclid World Affairs members participate annually in a Model U. N. Assembly held at the Lakewood Civic Auditorium.

SPIRIT CLUB OFFICERS

The Spirits Club is a newly organized club which is largely responsible for the organiza- tion of school spirit. Remaining anonymous until the end of their Senior year, members make posters, tags and sponsor buses in co- operation with other school organizations and the athletic department. The "Panther of the Week" award, given to an outstanding student, and the selling of Panther sweat- shirts were only two of their projects.

Hey Club

The International Key Club is a group or- ganized to promote community service. Spon- sored by the Kiwanis Club, members have the opportunity to visit various factories, hear speakers, and learn about the business world. Last summer Bob Chapman and Bill Zahler attended the International Key Club Conven- tion held in Texas. There they learned about the organization of other clubs.

Sports

Participation in sports develops sportsmanship and teamwork. Through the intra-mural program for girls and the various inter- school sports for boys, Euclid stud- ents were able to develop these characteristics. This year has been an eventful one as Euclid students saw the Cross-Country, Wrestling and Football Teams become champ- ion or Co-Champs of the Lake Erie League.

Student Life

Here, in Student Life, is the story of Euclid High, a school enriching the lives of all. To be a part of Euclid is more than attending clas- ses. It is friendships; the thrill of the first day; watching and cheering at an important game,- singing the "Star Spangled Ban- ner" at an assembly; or waiting for the 3:20 bell to ring. Regard- less of the occasion, the spirit exists and will remain in future years as memories of these events.

The Sophomore Class pre- sented their first assembly in the latter part of October. Euclid students went back to the roaring twenties where bathing beauties and night club singers whooped it up.

The slogan for the day the Juniors presented their assem- bly was "better late than never". Based on school life in the year 2000, scenes depicting the average school day and Home- coming were presented.

The "biggest and best" is what the Seniors worked for and achieved in their fall as- sembly. Patterned after Green- wich Village, the assembly used a regular stage setting for the first time.

Parents got a chance to learn about their child's courses at the annual Open House. Various remarks were heard; the most common being "Hon- estly, I don't know how the children do it. Those stairs really are a chal- lenge.

Through the hard work of the Deans and Mr. Owens, Euclid's an- nual College Nite was a success. The purpose of College Nite is to inform the students and parents on various college's curricula and requirements.

After game dances were always popular as they gave students a chance to get-together informally and talk over the game.

Next year, the after game dances will be as much looked forward to as they were this year. Gone with them are many memories of good fun.

This year because of the increased spirit, pep assemblies were held more often. The pep band, cheerleaders, and majorettes were all part of the excited crowd urging their team to bring home a victory.

The gym was like a bomb ready to explode before the crowd stood for the "Victory" cheer and the singing of the "Alma Mater" which brought the rallies to a close. The cheering continued — not stopping until after the game.

Concession workers were kept busy selling pop, coffee, candy, hot dogs, and popcorn to hungry customers. Through the efforts of the Student Council and Ad Club, refreshments and tickets were easily and quickly obtained, adding to the enjoyment of visitors. . iJ-H

The most memorable football game was the night Euclid beat Shaw to become Co-Champs of the Lake Erie League. Students began to gather at the high school about 6:30 for the car caravan which would travel to Shaw.

By out-cheering and out fighting Shaw, Euclid's team returned home to Euclid where students waited to greet them. It was a night to remem- ber, the night when the coaches' and team's beliefs and Euclid's spirit paid off.

To prepare students for future elec- tions, Euclid held its second mock election, Tuesday, November 4 under the direction of a Senior speech class. Students planned the election and helped at the ballot boxes, counting and tallying the returns.
